Biet and Hay Nguyen immigrated from Vietnam in the early 1980’s with their five children and were sponsored by Second Church and others in their settlement in Attleboro. The children were educated in Attleboro schools and have now fanned out across the country. Vien and Linh are the children of Hoa and Thuy Nguyen living in California. Vien is an undergraduate at Stanford University and is pursuing a dual major in computer science/mathematics and piano performance. His sister Linh is a junior at the Menlo School in Atherton, California. They are both accomplished classical musicians in piano and strings and have studied and performed internationally. They and their parents are giving this concert to Attleboro and Second Church to express their thanks for the life made possible through the generosity of those who aided the family three decades ago.

Admission to this concert is free, and donations to benefit the Food ‘n Friends program of the Attleboro Area Council of Churches will be accepted. This program provides tens of thousands of meals to needy families and individuals across the Attleboro area every year.

May 6, 2012, Communion Fifth Sunday of Easter
Scripture: Psalm 22:25-31
John 15:1-8
Sermon: “The Grapes of Love”
I’m struck by a few ideas… what if fruit reveals disciples, rather than creating them. If this is true then when we look back in history we see all sorts of interesting, difficult, challenging people like Paul, the dessert mothers and fathers, Francis of Assisi, Reinhold Nieuhr. What if the church is about being on the firing line rather than preparing for the siege? What does it really mean to be the grapes of love?

…And this: The grapes which are the sweetest are always closest to the main vine. Every so often we find that our vines are pruned, but this is good news because it centers us back to our true joy.

…Also this: About being spiritual and not religious…what’s one grape to say about the vine that spawned it?
