May 6, 2012, Communion Fifth Sunday of Easter
Scripture: Psalm 22:25-31
John 15:1-8
Sermon: “The Grapes of Love”
I’m struck by a few ideas… what if fruit reveals disciples, rather than creating them. If this is true then when we look back in history we see all sorts of interesting, difficult, challenging people like Paul, the dessert mothers and fathers, Francis of Assisi, Reinhold Nieuhr. What if the church is about being on the firing line rather than preparing for the siege? What does it really mean to be the grapes of love?…And this: The grapes which are the sweetest are always closest to the main vine. Every so often we find that our vines are pruned, but this is good news because it centers us back to our true joy.
…Also this: About being spiritual and not religious…what’s one grape to say about the vine that spawned it?
May 13, 2012 Sixth Sunday of Easter
Scripture: John 15:9-17
Sermon: “On Being a Band of Friends”
Jesus said love one another. Truly at the core of every church is being a band of friends, true friends the ones who don’t just belong to the same country club, but the ones who pledge to help nurture your children and come to your wake. A fancy word for this is Koinonia. Also this…extravagant welcome…
